We're Shopify developers serving Los Angeles brands: new stores, rebuilds, Shopify Plus, migrations to Shopify, and ERP and app integrations, run as a project or a monthly retainer. What our Shopify developers build for LA brands
This is the work a Los Angeles Shopify development company gets hired for, and our senior team covers all of it:
- Builds and rebuilds. Custom Liquid themes or a Theme Store theme fitted to the brand, kept in Git and reviewed change by change.
- Checkout and store logic. Checkout branding and UI extensions, and Shopify Functions for the pricing and delivery rules a theme can't hold.
- ERP and app integrations. NetSuite and other ERPs, PIM, shipping and marketplaces, connected through Shopify's GraphQL Admin API. ERP syncs made several times faster, with silent data loss eliminated.
- Shopify Tax in California, and the orders it skips. California's tax agency says the correct rate can't always be determined "based solely on a mailing address or zip code." Shopify's rooftop accuracy uses the street address, and Shopify includes it only in Shopify Tax. The catch, on Shopify's considerations page: Shopify Tax doesn't calculate "third-party app and API-generated orders" or orders with a product or shipping tax override, and a US-bound order it can't calculate gets "registration-based, non-rooftop accurate calculations." So we settle which system owns tax before a connector creates orders.
- Headless, when the theme is the limit. Headless Shopify on Next.js or on Shopify's own Hydrogen, while Shopify keeps running checkout.

Freelancer, marketplace or agency: what you're paying for
Shopify experts in Los Angeles turn up on hourly marketplaces, in the Shopify Partner Directory and on agency rankings, each with a rate or a rank attached. None says who writes the code or who keeps it. Here are the answers for four ways to hire, from one developer for one job to a team that stays after launch.
| What to check | Marketplace freelancer | Solo contractor | Large agency | Our team |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who writes the code | The profile you hired, plus any helpers. | One developer, start to finish. | A delivery team; ask who's assigned. | Senior engineers, with AI agents drafting. |
| Who owns the repo and accounts | Your contract and the marketplace's terms. | Your contract. Ask for your own repo. | Check the contract; repos and accounts may stay theirs. | Your repo and store; you control access, including apps built in your Dev Dashboard. |
| If the developer leaves | You rehire; the next one starts cold. | Unwritten knowledge leaves with them. | Someone new, briefed from the notes. | Same team; history lives in your pull requests. |
| Code review and QA | Self-reviewed, unless you hire a reviewer. | Self-reviewed; tests if they write them. | Usually a review step and QA staff. | Every diff read; review and security gates block release. |
| When the store breaks | Their availability, their time zone. | When one person is free. | A support queue, per the contract. | Triage first, then a written plan. |
| Ways to engage | Hourly or fixed-price, through the marketplace. | Hourly, per project or retainer. | Projects and retainers, often with minimums. | Project, retainer, fractional head of ecommerce or emergency. |
A freelance Los Angeles Shopify developer is the quickest hire for one contained job, and the thinnest cover when they're the only one who has read the code. A large agency covers that with headcount and a process you pay to sit inside. We cover it with review, and a history that stays in your repo. Agency output. Boutique team.
Project or retainer
Pick the shape that fits; we'll say if it's the other one.
- Project. A new store, a rebuild, a migration or an integration. It opens with an audit of the store, apps and integrations, the scope goes in writing before any code, and each release ships with a rollback plan.
- Retainer. For stores that keep changing: new features, theme work, integration changes and the fixes in between, worked from your backlog inside your repo.
- Fractional head of ecommerce. When the problem is direction, not code: the roadmap, vendor choices (including which developers to hire, us or not) and a P&L lens, with hands on the code when it helps.
Checkout already broken? That's not a scoping call: Store hacked or down? All four run on the same engineers, agents and gates, set out on How We Work.
Shopify Plus and B2B for LA brands
Move to Plus when a Plus-only feature would earn back its fee; size alone isn't a reason. Three questions:
- Need rules of your own? Since Shopify Scripts went dark on June 30, 2026, custom discount, shipping and payment logic lives in Shopify Functions, and only Plus stores can run Functions in a custom app. Other plans take Function logic from public App Store apps, with a few operations still reserved for Plus.
- Need prices per trade buyer? Shopify B2B isn't Plus-only. Shopify's plan table gives Basic, Grow and Advanced stores up to 3 active catalogs, none tied directly to one company, on new Shopify Markets. A few wholesale tiers fit any B2B plan; separate prices for many accounts take Plus.
- Is a second brand coming? Plus covers one brand per contract, so each brand brings its own contract.
For distributors across Los Angeles County, we build B2B from the ERP out. Plan-by-plan detail sits on our Shopify development services page.
Moving an LA brand to Shopify
From Magento, WooCommerce or BigCommerce, a move to Shopify is the job that stretches one pair of hands furthest: catalog, customers, redirects, integrations and the new theme all land at once. Rankings ride on the redirect map, so it gets built first. Each redirect is checked on staging before DNS moves, and launch day starts with a crawl of the old URL list. Shopify caps redirects by plan, 100,000 below Plus and 20 million on it. We count the old URLs before anyone signs. Leaving Magento? The full route is on Magento to Shopify migration; other routes start at ecommerce migration services.

Before you hire a Shopify developer in Los Angeles
Are you a Los Angeles Shopify agency?
We're a Shopify agency serving Los Angeles brands, without a Los Angeles office or address. Our service area is Orange County and Southern California, and we work remotely with everyone else. LA brands get the same senior team as every client, plus in-person meetings by arrangement.
Can our team meet you in Los Angeles?
Yes, by arrangement. We'll meet your team in Los Angeles when being together speeds things up: scoping with the people who run operations, a session on the theme, or the last check before launch. Everything else runs remotely, in briefs, pull requests and release notes.
Do you take smaller projects?
Yes. One theme section, an app swapped for a few lines of Liquid, one integration or a single Function app on Plus is a real project here, with an audit, a written scope and the same two gates as a rebuild. When small jobs keep coming, a retainer saves scoping each from scratch.
How much does a Shopify agency charge?
Every quote here follows an audit. It moves with the plan, the theme (adapted or built new), which apps get replaced with custom code, catalog size, integrations such as an ERP, product data quality and how much your team takes on. Our cost guide covers what the market typically charges, with sources.
How long does a Shopify project take?
The inputs set the pace more than the code: product data and images, design approval, decisions on which apps stay, access to the ERP and other systems, the redirect map on a migration, and any Plus or B2B setup. After the audit, the written plan names each dependency and who owns it.
Can you migrate an LA brand to Shopify?
Yes, from WooCommerce, BigCommerce or another platform. Catalog, customer and order data come across, every old URL gets mapped, and integrations are retested before cutover. Google tells site owners to "expect temporary fluctuation in site ranking during the move"; lasting damage usually traces to old URLs that now return a 404, which the redirect map is there to stop.
Should we hire a freelancer, a marketplace developer or an agency?
Match the hire to the job. A freelancer or marketplace developer suits a contained task, if someone on your side reviews the code. A large agency suits work that needs a bench and a formal process. The comparison on this page sets all four paths, us included, side by side on who writes the code, who owns it, review and continuity.
