Shopify development services that don't drown you in apps.
Our Shopify development services cover builds, rebuilds and Shopify Plus work: themes, checkout and discount logic on Shopify Functions, B2B catalogs and price lists, and ERP sync. We start with what Shopify does natively, add an app only when it earns its place, and tell you straight when another platform fits better.

What our Shopify development services cover
Most Shopify stores don't have a platform problem. They have an app problem: a subscription for every gap, each with access to store data and often more code on the storefront. As a Shopify development company, we build from the platform out, and our custom Shopify development services start where the admin stops.
- Themes. Online Store 2.0 themes in Liquid, with sections your team can rearrange without a developer, built with the Shopify CLI and kept in version control.
- Discount, shipping and payment logic. Shopify Functions for the rules Shopify Scripts used to run. Your own Function app on Plus; a vetted public Function app on other plans.
- Checkout. Checkout branding on Basic and up, plus apps on the thank-you and order-status pages.
- Custom apps. The work of a Shopify app development company, built for one store instead of the App Store: GraphQL Admin API apps for the jobs no public app does well.
- B2B. Companies, catalogs, price lists and payment terms, set up the way your buyers order.
- Integrations. ERP, PIM, shipping, tax and marketplace syncs that don't drop orders.
- Shopify Plus. Expansion stores for one brand, custom Function apps and UI extensions in the checkout steps: the work only Plus unlocks.
Changing platforms first? Moving from Magento to Shopify has its own page. Shopify holds up to 100,000 URL redirects, or 20 million on Plus, so a full redirect map fits. You can redirect only from broken URLs.
Native Shopify, an app, a Function or custom: how we decide
Read each row left to right. We stop at the first column that does the job.
Custom Functions need Plus
Shopify Scripts, a Plus-only feature, stopped running on June 30, 2026: editing and publishing ended April 15, and any Script still published was deactivated. The replacement is Shopify Functions. Plus stores can run Functions in custom apps of their own. On other plans, Function logic comes only inside public App Store apps, and a few operations, such as repricing a cart line or setting payment terms, need Plus even there.
| Requirement | Native Shopify | An app earns its place | A Function or custom app | A different platform |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B2B price lists and payment terms | Companies, price lists and net terms on every B2B plan. Off Plus: 3 active catalogs, no direct assignment, new Markets required. | Over 3 price tiers, no Plus. | On Plus: ERP-owned contract prices per company, synced in. | Formula-based pricing. 2 3 5 |
| Quantity rules | B2B minimums, maximums, increments and price breaks, every B2B plan. | Retail orders need limits too. | On Plus: cross-SKU rules in a validation Function. | Rarely decisive. 4 2 12 9 |
| Custom discounts and shipping logic | Discount codes and automatic discounts. Plus-only Scripts stopped running June 30, 2026. | Off Plus: public Function apps only. | On Plus: your own Discount and Delivery Customization Functions. | Rarely decisive. 15 6 7 8 9 10 11 |
| Checkout UI changes | Checkout branding, Basic and up; apps on thank-you and order-status pages. | Apps in the information, shipping and payment steps need Plus. | On Plus: sandboxed checkout UI extensions. | A rebuilt checkout. Headless still uses Shopify's. 17 16 35 |
| Subscriptions | Shopify's free Subscriptions app, on one of five eligible gateways such as Shopify Payments: auto-billing, discounts, self-service. No bundles. | Plan logic outgrows Shopify's app. | Custom billing on the selling plan and subscription contract APIs, once Shopify approves the scopes. | Rarely decisive. 26 27 28 29 30 |
| Product options beyond the variant limits | 2,048 variants, 3 options per product; some themes and custom apps may not support over 100. | Stockless add-ons; Combined Listings on Plus. | On Plus: repricing or bundles via Cart Transform. Repricing needs Plus even in public apps. | Configure-to-order rules: configurator first. 21 22 13 9 |
| Multi-store and markets | Markets: currency (with Shopify Payments), language and pricing per market. Plus: 9 expansion stores, one brand. | Rarely needed. | Shared products and stock: ERP-led sync. | Many brands, one catalog, one admin. 23 24 25 18 |
| ERP sync | GraphQL Admin API, not a sync; REST legacy since October 1, 2024. | Standard mapping, modest volume: a connector. | Orders can't drift: queued, idempotent sync. | Rarely decisive. 33 34 19 |
| Search and filtering on a large catalog | Free Shopify Search & Discovery app: 25 filters; none on collections over 5,000 products. | Part-number and spec search. | Attributes in tags: remodel as metafields. | Rarely; a search app closes the gap. 31 32 |
Shopify Plus: when the upgrade pays for itself
Plus isn't a better Shopify. It's the same Shopify with more doors unlocked, and a fee Shopify sets by contract term and, for higher-volume businesses, by revenue. The number lives on Shopify's Plus pricing page; we don't repeat it, because it changes.
What Plus unlocks, and what a Shopify Plus development agency builds with it, as of October 16, 2026:
- Custom Functions. Discount, delivery and payment logic in a custom app you own. Off Plus, Functions reach you only inside public App Store apps.
- The checkout steps. Checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps are Plus-only.
- B2B at volume. Unlimited B2B catalogs, direct assignment to companies and locations, deposits and partial payments.
- More stores. Your main store and 9 expansion stores, all for one brand, are included in the platform fee.
- API headroom. The GraphQL Admin API allows 1,000 points per second on Plus, against 100 on standard plans and 200 on Advanced. Plus also skips the variant creation throttle, which holds other stores past 500,000 variants to 10,000 new ones a day.
The upgrade pays for itself when one of those lines is already costing you: public apps stacked to imitate one custom Function, a fourth B2B catalog your plan won't allow, an ERP sync queuing behind rate limits, or a regional or wholesale store for the same brand. If none of that is true, keep your plan and spend the difference on the store.
On Plus the build changes shape, which is the work a Shopify enterprise agency is hired for: rules move into custom Function apps, checkout changes become extensions instead of installs, and integrations are designed for the higher limits instead of around the lower ones.
Shopify B2B for wholesale and trade buyers
Shopify B2B runs on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, not Starter or Retail, so wholesale can run from the same store as retail. As of October 16, 2026, Shopify's plan table gives every one of those plans:
- Companies and company locations, with location-level permissions.
- Catalogs with price lists: fixed prices or percentage adjustments.
- Quantity rules (minimum, maximum, increment) and quantity price breaks.
- Net payment terms, vaulted cards, PO numbers, draft-order invoicing, quick order lists and Shopify Flow automations.
What a B2B Shopify agency should tell you first: off Plus, you get up to 3 active catalogs across all your B2B markets, and no catalog assigned directly to a company. Below Plus, B2B catalogs also need the store to be on new Shopify Markets. Deposits, partial payments and payment requests per fulfillment are Plus-only, and customizing the storefront and checkout for B2B buyers through Markets takes Advanced or Plus. A wholesaler with three price tiers fits on any B2B plan. A distributor with contract pricing per account is a Plus conversation.
As a Shopify B2B ecommerce agency, we set it up the way your buyers reorder: price lists synced from the ERP, payment terms that match the invoice, and quick order lists for the buyer who knows the part numbers. Punchout catalogs and EDI with trading partners are integration work, not settings, and they're covered on our page about B2B features Shopify doesn't cover natively.
ERP, PIM and the rest of your Shopify stack
For most businesses big enough to run an ERP, Shopify isn't the system of record. The ERP owns stock, cost and customer terms, a PIM may own product data, and Shopify owns the storefront and checkout. The job is keeping them in agreement without anyone babysitting a spreadsheet.
We build those syncs on the GraphQL Admin API. Shopify has called the REST Admin API legacy since October 1, 2024, so a connector still built on REST is a migration waiting to happen. Large reads go through bulk operations instead of page-by-page polling. Every order, stock change and price update moves through a queue with an idempotency key, so a retry can't create a duplicate and a timeout can't drop an order without a trace. A replacement sync runs in shadow beside the old connector until the numbers match, then we cut over.
We go deepest on NetSuite (REST web services, SuiteQL, SuiteScript); Sage, QuickBooks and Dynamics 365 Business Central are in scope too. The record: ERP syncs made several times faster, with silent data loss eliminated. The method is on our ERP integration page.
When Shopify is the wrong platform
We'd rather talk you out of a Shopify build than win the wrong one. Shopify is the wrong call when:
- Pricing is a rules engine. Shopify price lists hold fixed prices or percentage adjustments. Customer-specific formulas recalculated from cost fight that model.
- One admin has to run many sites. Plus includes a main store and 9 expansion stores for one brand, each its own store, and Shopify requires a separate Plus contract per brand. Many brands sharing one catalog and back office is what Magento's multi-site structure is for.
- You need to change the platform itself. Shopify extends only through apps, APIs and Functions, never by editing its core, so heavy order workflows live in middleware. Even a headless storefront hands buyers to Shopify's checkout.
Magento is home. We're fluent everywhere else. When those lines describe you, our Magento development services are the honest answer, and BigCommerce is the other one we weigh. When only the storefront is the limit, headless Shopify on Next.js or Hydrogen, Shopify's own headless toolkit, keeps Shopify's back end and replaces the theme. Shopify's headless guide is blunt about the trade: a headless storefront costs more to build and run than a theme.
How a Shopify engagement runs
Three ways in. Same team, same gates.
- Project. A build, rebuild, replatform, integration or audit, scoped in writing before any code.
- Retainer. Shopify care and maintenance: theme and app updates, Function and integration fixes, new features as the business asks, and someone watching the store after launch.
- Fractional head of ecommerce. Roadmap, vendors, a P&L lens and hands on the code when needed, for teams that need ecommerce leadership without a full-time hire.
Every change clears our code review and security gates before it reaches your store. Agencies can hire us too: we build under your name, invisible to your client. Our engagement models, including white-label builds for agencies, are on How We Work. Selling from Southern California? Start with Shopify developers serving Los Angeles.
We don't publish prices. A Shopify build's cost moves with catalog size, integrations, customizations, data quality and the team you already have; our guide to what an ecommerce website costs covers what the market charges and why.
Shopify consulting before you commit
Not ready to build? It starts with an audit of the store you have: every app with what it costs, what data it can reach and what it loads on the storefront; the theme and its customizations; each integration and where it drifts. You get a written roadmap: what Shopify can do natively, which apps go, what becomes a Function, and whether Plus earns its fee. If you're weighing the upgrade, we work as Shopify Plus consultants on exactly that question. The audit is yours to keep, whether or not we do the build.
Shopify development questions
What is a Shopify agency partner?
A Shopify Partner is a member of Shopify's Partner Program: a business or developer that builds apps, themes or storefronts, or delivers services that help merchants grow. The Partner Directory sorts service partners into Select, Plus, Premier and Platinum tiers on factors including proven success on Shopify. Partners listed there work independently, so judge each on its work.
What does a Shopify partner agency do?
It builds and runs Shopify stores for merchants: themes, custom apps, migrations, integrations, B2B setup, Plus work and care after launch. The useful ones also tell you what not to build, since every app and customization keeps costing you. When you compare Shopify development companies, ask each for the app list on a store it built recently. It shows how they think.
What is Shopify Plus?
Shopify Plus is Shopify's plan for larger, more complex businesses: the same platform with features other plans lack. As of October 16, 2026, those include custom apps with Shopify Functions, checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps, unlimited B2B catalogs, 9 expansion stores for one brand, and 1,000 points per second on the GraphQL Admin API, against 100 on standard plans.
How much is Shopify Plus?
Shopify sets the Plus fee, not us, and it changes, so check Shopify's Plus pricing page. As of October 16, 2026, that page prices Plus by contract term and moves more complex or higher-volume businesses to a variable fee based on revenue. The build, apps and integrations come on top; our ecommerce website cost guide covers those.
When should we upgrade to Shopify Plus?
Upgrade when going without a Plus-only feature already costs you sales or money: your own Function app for discount, shipping or payment logic, changes inside the checkout steps, more than 3 active B2B catalogs, catalogs assigned to specific companies, expansion stores for the same brand, or more API headroom for an ERP sync. If none of those applies, stay put.
Is Shopify Plus worth it?
It's worth it when Plus-only features replace something you'd otherwise pay for or work around: public apps imitating one custom Function, B2B pricing squeezed into 3 catalogs, an ERP sync throttled at 100 or 200 points per second, or a regional or wholesale store for the same brand. Weigh that against Shopify's published fee. If the features would sit unused, it isn't.
How much does a Shopify build cost?
We don't publish prices for Shopify store development services, because the drivers change from store to store: catalog size, integrations (ERP, PIM, shipping, tax), the custom logic and checkout work involved, data quality, and the team you already have. Our ecommerce website cost guide covers what the market typically charges, with sources. We scope yours in writing after an audit.
