To optimize for ChatGPT shopping, get your catalog in (allow OAI-SearchBot, then use Shopify Catalog, Etsy or an approved OpenAI product feed), keep feed prices and stock identical to your product pages, and compete on the seller factors OpenAI states: availability, price, quality, and being the maker or primary seller. As of October 24, 2026, OpenAI says purchases are completed on "merchant-owned websites or apps" (OpenAI).
A guide Google's AI Overview cites for this search, last updated in December 2025, still teaches Instant Checkout as live. On March 24, 2026, OpenAI said its first version "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide" and handed checkout back to merchants (OpenAI). What's left to win is the pick: whether ChatGPT shows your product, and whether it lists you first among its sellers. And a direct feed carries a clause most guides skip: OpenAI's Merchant Feed Terms, updated October 13, 2026, bar you from blocking its crawlers in robots.txt.
This guide is for merchants on any platform and the developers who build their feeds. You'll get every required field in OpenAI's current spec and the optional ones that trip feeds, with the renames that break older feeds; OpenAI's stated seller factors beside measured ones; each platform's route in; and a way to measure ChatGPT shopping visibility when clicks arrive without a referrer.
What changed
- October 13, 2026. OpenAI's updated Merchant Feed Terms bar direct-feed merchants from blocking its crawlers.
- October 10, 2026. WISLR, an analytics vendor, first observed a "Shop at" button naming one retailer under recommended products. OpenAI hasn't announced it.
- March 24, 2026. OpenAI extended the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) to product discovery and let merchants use their own checkout.
- September 29, 2025. Instant Checkout and ACP launched, starting with US Etsy sellers.
How ChatGPT shopping works
When a question signals shopping intent, ChatGPT "can show product options with imagery, product details, and links to sites where you can learn more or purchase" (OpenAI). As of October 24, 2026, OpenAI's merchants page says shopping is "currently live for ChatGPT users in the U.S." (OpenAI), though Peec AI, a vendor reading ChatGPT's debug data, reported on October 16, 2026 that shopping answers in Europe still draw on Google Shopping rather than feeds (Peec AI).
Where product data comes from
OpenAI says ChatGPT weighs "Structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers (e.g., price, product description) and other third-party content". That metadata arrives three ways: OAI-SearchBot's crawl of your pages, platform catalogs such as Shopify's and Etsy's, and product feeds.
Since July 2026, feeds carry most of it, by one vendor's count. Profound observed the share of ChatGPT's shopping recommendations drawn from integrated feeds jump from 8.26% to 61.54% on July 10, 2026, across 1,757,723 prompt runs in July (Profound, September 3, 2026).
What a shopper sees
Pick a product and "ChatGPT may show a list of merchants offering it" (OpenAI). Prices in the first answer "typically reflect the price from the first merchant listed, which may not be the lowest available price", and the cheapest offer ChatGPT knows of may carry a "Best price" label.
If you call that merchant list the buy box, OpenAI doesn't. Its help center files it under "How merchants are selected", and its developer docs describe an "Open" button per seller in the product sidebar (OpenAI). The single "Shop at" button is a third party's observation, kept separate in step 3.
What happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout
Short version: the cart left the chat. Instant Checkout launched on September 29, 2025, letting US users "buy directly from U.S. Etsy sellers right in chat" (OpenAI). On March 24, 2026, OpenAI changed course, "allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery" (OpenAI). Three days later, Modern Retail reported that a Walmart executive had told Wired of "conversion rates three times lower for the selection sold directly inside the chatbot than those that require clicking out".
OpenAI's pages still disagree. As of October 24, 2026, the merchants page says OpenAI is "moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience", the help article says ChatGPT "may also show an Instant Checkout option", and the developer Key concepts page still opens with the "three flows" Instant Checkout requires.
Where checkout happens: your site, or your own ChatGPT app
"Customers complete their purchase on your site or app" (OpenAI). OpenAI calls ChatGPT apps "optional" and "best suited for larger merchants who want more control" (OpenAI), and as of October 24, 2026, documents in-chat checkout for plugins "currently in beta" (OpenAI).
Do you still need checkout in your feed?
No. In the Stable spec, checkout defaults to disabled, and is_eligible_checkout "opts in only when search eligibility is also true and checkout is enabled for the integration" (OpenAI). Build OpenAI's checkout anyway and the obligations are yours: "OpenAI is not the merchant of record" (OpenAI), refunds and chargebacks stay with you, and if you integrate the Delegated Payment Spec directly rather than through your payment provider, OpenAI "may require your attestation of compliance (AOC) before enabling production access" (OpenAI).
Step 1: get listed in ChatGPT shopping
As of October 24, 2026, there are four ways in, and they stack: run the crawl plus whichever structured route your platform allows.
Let OAI-SearchBot in
OpenAI is blunt: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links" (OpenAI). It recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and "allowing requests from our published IP ranges", so check your CDN and firewall too, and says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to register. GPTBot is a separate agent for training, and ChatGPT-User, which fetches pages a user asks for, "is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search". The minimum:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /A named group replaces your User-agent: * rules for that bot alone: OAI-SearchBot then ignores your wildcard Disallow lines, while GPTBot, which has no group here, still obeys them.
Add no path rules for OpenAI's agents if a direct feed is on your roadmap. OpenAI's Merchant Feed Terms, updated October 13, 2026, bind the merchant that signs them, whether it sends the feed itself or through an agent, not to "prevent or disallow crawling by OpenAI's and its Affiliates' web crawlers, including through robots.txt files", to allowlist OpenAI's "signed Web Bot Auth traffic", and not to reserve text-and-data-mining rights against OpenAI. The clause names no crawler and exempts no path. If your robots.txt blocks GPTBot, or a User-agent: * group disallows paths that OpenAI's other crawlers inherit, read the clause with counsel before you apply. Mid-replatform? See AI-crawler access and AI-answer baselines in our replatforming checklist.
Use your platform's catalog
"If you sell through Shopify or Etsy, your catalog is already integrated, and no additional setup or application is required" (OpenAI).
Apply for a direct feed, or use a provider
Everyone else applies: "Onboarding product feeds in ChatGPT is currently available to approved partners" (OpenAI). The form on the merchants page asks for a named person ("First name", "Last name", "Work title", "LinkedIn", "Work email"), your headquarters country, product categories and unique SKU count, and applicants join a waitlist. As of October 24, 2026, the merchants page says OpenAI aims for "a self-service merchant portal later this year".
The terms go further than robots.txt. You grant OpenAI "a worldwide, royalty-free license" to your merchant content, which it may also use "for purposes of a search index and improving the OpenAI Services"; you "may not make any public statement regarding the relationship"; and "OpenAI's total liability will not exceed $1,000" (OpenAI).
As of October 24, 2026, OpenAI runs feeds through the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open specification "currently in beta" with OpenAI, Stripe and Meta as lead maintainers (ACP). Implementing it lists you nowhere by itself: OpenAI still approves each partner. And ACP's own feed schema is nested, like OpenAI's Draft, so build the file you upload to the Stable spec below, not to ACP's. A provider can deliver the feed instead: OpenAI names "third-party providers like Salesforce and Stripe" (OpenAI).
Who can't list
As of October 24, 2026, three groups. Stores that don't sell to US shoppers: the standard upload uses ["US"] "regardless of" a row's market column (OpenAI). B2B-only catalogs on Shopify, whose agentic storefronts "support only direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales" (Shopify). And prohibited categories: OpenAI's Commerce policies, updated September 29, 2026, rule out supplements, alcohol, "Self-defense weapons", certain knives, "Dangerous chemicals and hazardous materials", recalled products and "Payment-network restricted" businesses, among others, and OpenAI can remove listings "for any reason".
The ChatGPT product feed checklist, field by field
This is OpenAI's Stable file-upload spec for products, read on October 24, 2026; the page carries no date. Its Draft view, a nested schema, is "not supported for production integrations yet". OpenAI says to "Push feeds to OpenAI via SFTP", as parquet, which it prefers, or as jsonl.gz, csv.gz or tsv.gz, in UTF-8, "Up to 500k items per shard", as a full snapshot "at least daily" (OpenAI). Promotions go through the API only (OpenAI).
ChatGPT product feed fields in OpenAI's Stable spec, as of October 24, 2026
| Field | Status | OpenAI's rule | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
item_id | Required | Unique per item or variant; "Never reuse it for a different item." | OpenAI "matches products by item_id, not by filename" |
title | Required | Include the selected variant; aim for at most 150 characters | ChatGPT may show its own simplified title |
description | Required | "Factual product description for this item"; aim for at most 5,000 characters | Marketing copy where facts belong |
url | Required | The product page, "with the variant selected when possible. Keep it stable." | link, the 2025 name, isn't an alias |
brand | Required | "as shown on the product page" | Placeholders: "Use a real brand and seller name" |
seller_name | Required | "Name of the seller supplying this offer" | store_name, the January 2026 name, isn't an alias |
image_url | Required | Main image "showing this variant", at a public URL | image_link, the 2025 name, isn't an alias |
availability | Required | in_stock, out_of_stock, pre_order, backorder or unknown | "Omitted, empty, or unrecognized values reject the row" |
price | Required | Regular price in major units, written 79.99 USD | Minor units (7999), the Draft and API format |
sale_price | Optional | "strictly less than price, and in the same currency" | Sale dates "do not schedule price or availability changes" |
is_eligible_search | Optional | Defaults to true; false also disables checkout | Dropped products linger "for up to 14 days"; send false instead |
is_eligible_checkout | Conditionally required (to opt into checkout) | Off by default; needs search on and checkout enabled for the integration | A leftover enable_checkout column overrides it |
group_id, listing_has_variations, variant_dict | Conditional (variants) | listing_has_variations is true "on every variant row" | Without group_id, no variant group forms |
gtin, mpn | Optional | GTIN: "exactly 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits, including a valid check digit"; MPN: "do not invent a value to replace a missing GTIN" | An ISBN-10, or an ID stored as a number |
shipping_price | Optional | "Omitted or empty means unknown, not free shipping" | A blank read as free |
review_count, star_rating | Optional | "Exclude seller and store reviews"; ratings 0 to 5, paired with a count | Store reviews sent as product reviews |
offer_id | Optional | "Use it to distinguish offers that share a product URL" | "Never include price in an offer ID." |
accepts_returns, return_deadline_in_days, return_policy | Optional | The window goes in "only with accepts_returns=true"; a final-sale item gets accepts_returns=false and no window | "A policy URL does not set or override this field." |
condition, material, dimensions, weight | Optional | condition is new, refurbished or used; dimensions need "at least two of length, width, and height, plus unit"; weight is "net product weight, without packaging" | Used or refurbished items sent without condition, or a weight with no item_weight_unit |
Three rules cover every column: no placeholder strings such as null or n/a, "An empty value does not mean zero or false", and identifiers stay strings, to keep leading zeros (OpenAI). Marketplace, store-review and market columns need integration setup: adding them alone "does not enable them". OpenAI suggests starting with "around 100 items" (OpenAI).
The old field names that break a feed
By January 20, 2026, OpenAI had rewritten its October 2025 feed spec; both versions are archived (October 2025, January 2026). The alias rules hold two traps. When both names are sent, "the enable_ flags win over their is_eligible_ names" and "return_window wins over return_deadline_in_days", so a feed that adds is_eligible_checkout=false but keeps enable_checkout=true stays opted in until the old column goes. And link, image_link and store_name aren't on the alias list, so an October 2025 feed misses url and image_url, and a January 2026 feed misses seller_name.
Old feed field names (October 2025 unless marked) against the Stable spec, as of October 24, 2026
| Old name | Stable name | Accepted as an alias? |
|---|---|---|
enable_search | is_eligible_search | Yes, and the old name wins if both are sent |
enable_checkout | is_eligible_checkout | Yes, and the old name wins |
return_window | return_deadline_in_days | Yes, and the old name wins |
id | item_id | Yes, as id or sku; item_id wins |
item_group_id | group_id | Yes; group_id wins |
Custom_variant1_category, Custom_variant1_option | variant_dict | Yes; variant_dict wins |
link | url | Not listed |
image_link, additional_image_link | image_url, additional_image_urls | Not listed |
store_name (January 2026) | seller_name | Not listed |
product_review_count, product_review_rating | review_count, star_rating | Not listed |
inventory_quantity, popularity_score, return_rate, q_and_a, raw_review_data | None | Gone from the Stable spec |
If a guide says OpenAI accepts updates every 15 minutes, it's quoting the October 2025 page. By January 2026 the spec said "daily", and OpenAI's current advice is a full file once a day plus API updates (OpenAI). Fifteen minutes is Stripe's advice for its own catalog feed (Stripe).
A minimal row with the nine required fields, before gzip. brand is the maker and seller_name is who sells it, so a reseller's row carries two names:
{"item_id":"BV-316-100","title":"316 Stainless Steel Ball Valve, 1 in. NPT","description":"Two-piece 316 stainless steel ball valve with a locking lever handle and 1 in. female NPT threads.","url":"https://www.example.com/products/316-ball-valve-1-in?utm_source=chatgpt.com&utm_medium=feed","brand":"Example Valve Co.","seller_name":"Example Industrial Supply","image_url":"https://www.example.com/images/316-ball-valve-1-in.jpg","availability":"in_stock","price":"79.99 USD"}OpenAI suggests utm_medium=feed for feed-specific click tracking (OpenAI); we add the source too (see the measurement section).
Step 2: get picked in ChatGPT shopping results
What OpenAI says decides it
OpenAI publishes inputs, not weights. A product "appears in the carousel when ChatGPT perceives it to be relevant to your intent", and a budget shifts the weight: "if you specify a budget of $30, ChatGPT will focus more on price" (OpenAI). OpenAI's Key concepts page says recommended feed attributes, "like rich media, reviews, and performance signals", "improve ranking, relevance, and user trust". One catch: the fields OpenAI's 2025 spec grouped as performance signals, popularity_score and return_rate, are gone from the Stable spec.
What's been measured
The two vendors below both have something to sell, so read these as associations:
- Concentration. Comparing July 7 to 9 with July 10 to 12, 2026, across 33,167 prompt runs, Profound saw the top 10 merchants' share rise from 22.5% to 41.8% and unique merchants fall from 13,524 to 10,607 (Profound).
- Instability. "The carousel is a shuffle, not a ranking," Profound wrote on March 26, 2026: about 95% of product titles appeared in fewer than 30% of runs for the same prompt (Profound).
- Google Shopping overlap. In a March 2026 post, Peec AI reported that of more than 43,000 ChatGPT carousel products, 83% were strong matches to products in Google's top 40 organic shopping results, against 11% for Bing (Peec AI). It measured ChatGPT 5.3 and 5.4, before the July feed shift.
Our reading: feeds count for more than they did before July, and Google Shopping strength may still travel with ChatGPT visibility.
Product pages that answer buying questions
The page still counts. Shopping research reads "product pages directly, citing sources" (OpenAI), and the feed terms make you warrant your pricing "is and will remain complete, correct and current" and fix "discrepancies between the Merchant Content and information displayed on Merchant properties" when OpenAI asks (OpenAI). So the page and the feed should match, in the HTML itself: WISLR's advice is to "Put the price, availability and Offer structured data in the HTML the server sends" (WISLR). Fill the attributes buyers compare, such as material, dimensions, weight and condition. That's ecommerce SEO and AI search visibility work, and on a big catalog, AI catalog pipelines with human review can fill the gaps.
Step 3: win ChatGPT's "Shop at" button
On October 10, 2026, WISLR, which sells AI-traffic analytics, observed ChatGPT "placing a 'Shop at' button under the products it recommends in shopping answers". The buttons read "Shop at", "View at", "Buy at" or "Order from", "each followed by one retailer", and appeared on 11% to 20% of shopping answers from October 10 to 13, up from "under 0.1%". Across the four product brands WISLR tracks, 56% of buttons went to big-box retailers, 39% to competitor brands and specialist retailers, and 5% to the brand's own store (WISLR, published October 14, updated October 16, 2026).
As of October 24, 2026, OpenAI hasn't announced the button or tied it to the per-seller "Open" button in its docs, and "OpenAI hasn't said how it chooses the retailer behind a button," WISLR notes. OpenAI has published how it ranks the merchant list.
What decides the seller pick, stated against observed, as of October 24, 2026
| Factor | What OpenAI states | What third parties observed | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Availability | Listed: merchants "are ranked based on factors like availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of that item" | None we found | availability on every row, updated when stock changes |
| Price | Listed; a budget makes ChatGPT "focus more on price" | None we found | Current price and sale_price, in the feed and on the page |
| Quality | Listed, not defined | None we found | Product-level review_count and star_rating, and complete attributes |
| Maker or primary seller | Listed | WISLR: 5% of buttons went to the brand's own store, October 10 to 13, 2026 | A true brand and seller_name; sell direct if you make it |
| Instant Checkout | Listed in 2025 ("whether Instant Checkout is enabled"), when OpenAI also said "Instant Checkout items are not preferred in product results"; not listed as of October 24, 2026 | None we found | Don't build in-chat checkout to rank |
| Feed integration | Not listed; richer data brings "better placement in results" | Profound: feed-integrated share 8.26% to 61.54% on July 10, 2026 | Get into a feed or a platform catalog |
| Your page among the answer's sources | Not listed | WISLR: 34% of buttons to the brand's store with its page as a source, 6% without | Allow OAI-SearchBot; price, stock and Offer markup in the server's HTML |
| Google Shopping rank | Not listed | Peec AI: 83% of carousel products matched Google's top 40 shopping results, on ChatGPT 5.3 and 5.4 | A correlate in the US; in Europe, Peec AI observed Google Shopping as the source (October 2026) |
None of it buys a slot: the spec says "Eligibility does not guarantee display", and the feed terms let OpenAI "remove or decide not to display any Merchant Content at its sole discretion" (OpenAI).
Brands, resellers and retailers selling the same product
If you make the product, the "maker or primary seller" factor is yours to claim, yet WISLR's four brands got 5% of their buttons. Its strongest lever was the source list: 34% against 6%. WISLR calls that direction solid and the exact percentages "provisional", from "four days of data". So get your own product page cited: crawlable, priced in the HTML, and specific enough to answer the buying question.
If you resell, compete on the other three factors, against big-box sellers who start ahead: Profound found the top 20 merchants holding about 40% of 22.5 million buy offers from March 10 to 20, 2026 (Profound). What you control is the offer: price and stock, a valid gtin or mpn (never invented), an offer_id with no price in it, and a seller_name that matches the store shoppers land on.
Your platform's path into ChatGPT shopping
This table reads each platform's own pages as of October 24, 2026. On every route but Etsy's, the buyer checks out on your site.
Platform routes into ChatGPT shopping, as of October 24, 2026
| Platform | Route in | Who sends the data | First check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Shopify Catalog through agentic storefronts, "active by default for eligible stores" (Shopify) | Shopify | Sales channels > Agentic; US customers; store policies completed |
| Etsy | Catalog "already integrated" (OpenAI); an Etsy app in ChatGPT, launched in beta on May 5, 2026 (TechCrunch) | Etsy | Nothing to apply for; buyers check out on Etsy |
| BigCommerce | Feedonomics Agentic Catalog Exports, "Initially available as an enterprise service" (Commerce) | Feedonomics | Whether your Feedonomics contract covers it |
| WooCommerce | Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite "through the official Stripe extension" (WooCommerce), or a third-party plugin | Stripe, or the plugin | Whether the suite is live on your Stripe account |
| Magento Open Source, Adobe Commerce | A third-party Marketplace extension; no native Adobe support found | You, through the extension | OpenAI's approval, which no extension replaces |
| Salesforce Commerce Cloud | A delivery path OpenAI names (OpenAI) | Salesforce | Ask Salesforce how it delivers |
| Headless or custom | A direct feed by application, or a provider | Your team | The Merchant Feed Terms and the named contact |
Shopify
Shopify says "there's no option to activate or deactivate a ChatGPT direct checkout setting" (Shopify). Two details still need a look: legal disclosures belong "in the first 6,000 characters" of a product description (Shopify), and "B2B pricing doesn't display on agentic storefronts" (Shopify). The off switches are independent: turning off Catalog access takes "up to 7 days" and products "might still be displayed" through crawling, while blocking crawlers "affects only open-web discoverability".
BigCommerce and WooCommerce
Commerce, the company behind BigCommerce and Feedonomics, lists "OpenAI/ChatGPT" as an Agentic Catalog Exports destination in its April 27, 2026 release, which never names ACP (Commerce). WooCommerce called itself "a launch partner" for Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite on December 11, 2025, with the suite due "in the coming months" (WooCommerce). Ask Stripe which AI agents your account can reach.
Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce
No Adobe page we read says Adobe Commerce supports OpenAI's feed or ACP natively. The Adobe Commerce Marketplace carries third-party extensions for it, such as the OpenAI Agentic Commerce Feed listing, which maps "Magento attributes to the required feed fields" on a cron schedule. Check any listing against the current spec: that one describes "TSV, CSV, XML, and JSON" output, the formats of OpenAI's October 2025 page, not the parquet and gzipped files Stable takes. It also says "A separate OpenAI merchant account / onboarding approval is required", so no extension skips the queue. To own the export, build it as your own module, which is Magento development work.
Headless and custom stores
No shortcut: the crawl, a provider or a direct feed, with the terms and the named contact from step 1. Build the feed where price and stock live, so the feed and the page read from one source, as with channel feeds built from your ERP. On a headless commerce build, render price and availability on the server.
How to measure ChatGPT shopping visibility and sales
Start with what a click carries, because it isn't much. WISLR reports that "From October 8 to 15, every outbound link we tested in ChatGPT opened without a referrer and without a UTM tag", and that the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag returned on October 15 while the referrer stayed missing (WISLR). As of October 24, 2026, OpenAI's publisher FAQ, which search snippets quote on the tag, redirects to an unrelated article, so treat utm_source=chatgpt.com as observed behavior, not a documented contract.
A ChatGPT shopping measurement plan, as of October 24, 2026
| Metric | Source | Cadence | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sessions, orders and revenue from ChatGPT | GA4, on source chatgpt.com | Weekly | What ChatGPT sends; an undercount when the tag drops |
| Feed clicks | utm_source=chatgpt.com&utm_medium=feed on every feed url | Weekly | Visits that came through the feed |
| Prompt panel | Fixed buying prompts, several runs each, logging presence, position and which retailer gets the button | Weekly | Visibility and the seller pick, which analytics can't see |
| Crawler hits | Server or CDN logs for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User | Weekly | Whether OpenAI reaches your pages |
| Feed health | Rejected rows and validation errors | Every upload | Rows lost to bad or outdated fields |
| Price and stock parity | Feed values against the live page | Daily | Discrepancies, before OpenAI asks |
| ChatGPT ads | Paid clicks, tagged apart; OpenAI's ads example uses utm_source=openai (OpenAI) | Weekly | Paid results, out of the organic numbers |
In GA4, give ChatGPT its own channel. GA4's default channel group has an AI Assistant channel, but it pools ChatGPT with other assistants, and GA4 fills it from the referrer, which WISLR observed missing (Google). In Admin, under Data display, open Channel groups and create a new group, which starts as a copy of the default. Add a channel named ChatGPT whose condition is Source exactly matches chatgpt.com, and move it above AI Assistant and Referral, since GA4 puts traffic in the first channel whose condition it meets (Google). Mark October 8 to 15, 2026 in your reports, and read the prompt panel as a trend across runs, never as a rank from one.
One gap nobody has tested in public: whether ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to a feed url that already carries utm_medium=feed. If it doesn't, those clicks miss a channel keyed on source. On a feed that goes only to OpenAI, set both yourself (utm_source=chatgpt.com&utm_medium=feed), then click through to one of your own listings and check what lands.
ChatGPT product feed ads: a separate door
ChatGPT also sells ads, and as of October 24, 2026, a beta lets you build them from a product feed. Different door: "Products from your feed will only be eligible for use in ads during this beta. They will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations" (OpenAI). Ads "run on separate systems from our chat model" (OpenAI).
Feeds created in Ads Manager make products "ads-eligible by default", and their items "expire after 2 weeks"; the organic file keeps is_ads_eligible off unless a feed-level Ads default applies. Ads show only on the Free and Go plans, in 89 countries as of October 21, 2026 (OpenAI), while OpenAI describes organic shopping as US-only. OpenAI's developer docs call product-feed campaigns "open beta" and give no launch date or SKU limit (OpenAI).
Mistakes that keep products out of ChatGPT, and when to wait
Most trace to one field or clause: a blocked OAI-SearchBot, a feed that disagrees with the page, unknown sent when you know the stock, and a leftover enable_checkout column.
Hold the feed project if your catalog is quote-only (price is required), you sell B2B-only on Shopify, or you don't sell to US shoppers, and keep the crawl open either way. Lines in OpenAI's prohibited categories are out on every route. A missing GTIN isn't a reason to wait, since the field is optional; missing brand data is, since brand is required.
ChatGPT shopping FAQ
How do I get my products listed in ChatGPT shopping?
As of October 24, 2026, four ways: allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl your product pages; sell through Shopify or Etsy, whose catalogs OpenAI says are "already integrated"; send a feed through a provider OpenAI names, such as Salesforce or Stripe; or apply at chatgpt.com/merchants for a direct product feed, which OpenAI opens to "approved partners".
Do I need a product feed to appear in ChatGPT shopping?
No. OpenAI's merchants page answers that question directly: "No, but feeds give you greater control over how your products appear, helping ensure more accurate and up-to-date information." The data leans toward feeds: Profound, an AI-visibility vendor, observed the feed-integrated share of ChatGPT's shopping recommendations jump from 8.26% to 61.54% on July 10, 2026.
What happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout?
Instant Checkout, launched September 29, 2025, let US users buy inside ChatGPT. On March 24, 2026, OpenAI said it "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide" and let merchants use their own checkout. As of October 24, 2026, OpenAI says purchases are completed on "merchant-owned websites or apps".
How does ChatGPT decide which seller gets the "Shop at" button?
As of October 24, 2026, OpenAI hasn't said; WISLR, a third-party tracker, first saw the button on October 10. OpenAI ranks merchants on factors like "availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller". In WISLR's early data, 34% of a brand's buttons went to its store when its page was an answer source, against 6% otherwise.
Are ChatGPT shopping results ads?
No. OpenAI's help center says "Product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships." Ads are a separate unit "below a ChatGPT response" on the Free and Go plans, and as of October 24, 2026, products from an ads feed "will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations" during the beta.
Does it cost anything to appear in ChatGPT shopping?
Not as of October 24, 2026. OpenAI's merchants page says "There are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT", and Shopify says "There are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT." Fees have moved before: in January 2026, The Information reported a 4% fee on ChatGPT checkout sales for Shopify merchants, and Shopify's terms reserve the right to charge.
How can I see whether my products appear in ChatGPT, and track the sales?
Run a fixed panel of buying prompts weekly, several times each, logging which products appear and which retailer gets the button: Profound saw about 95% of product titles in fewer than 30% of repeat runs. Track sales by the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag WISLR observed, not by referrer, which it saw missing; mark October 8 to 15, 2026, when the tag dropped.
Do Shopify stores need to do anything to show up in ChatGPT?
Usually not. As of October 24, 2026, Shopify says agentic storefronts is "active by default for eligible stores", and "You don't need to do anything for your products to be discovered by ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog." The store must sell to US customers, have its policies completed and list products eligible for Shopify Catalog; B2B-only products aren't supported.
Is ChatGPT shopping available outside the US?
Not through merchant feeds. As of October 24, 2026, OpenAI's merchants page says "Shopping is currently live for ChatGPT users in the U.S.", and its standard feed upload "currently targets the US". Peec AI, a vendor, reported European shopping answers drawing on Google Shopping in October 2026. ChatGPT ads ran in 89 countries as of October 21, 2026.
